White House Honors Sina Bahram as a “Champion of Change”

Photo of Sina BahramPresident Barack Obama recognized North Carolina State University student Sina Bahram as one of 14 “Champions of Change” at a White House ceremony May 7, honoring those who have made significant efforts to make science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) more accessible to people with disabilities. Bahram, who earned his undergraduate and master’s degrees from NC State, is currently a Ph.D. student in computer science. His research focuses on improving the interaction between users and technology. This field of study is of particular importance to Bahram, who is blind. more

Announcing the Android Malware Genome Project

Smartphones are everywhere – and so is mobile malware, especially on popular platforms like Android. Dr. Xuxian Jiang is leading a group of researchers who are developing effective solutions for malware attacks in the Android Malware Genome Project. more

Department Confers 185 Degrees During Spring Diploma Ceremony

Photo of Alex PoulosThe NC State Department of Computer Science conferred 185 degrees during the Spring Diploma Ceremony on May 11, 2012. More than 1,200 relatives and guests celebrated with our graduates, faculty and staff during our ceremony held at Hope Community Church in Raleigh. This graduating class included 4 Ph.D., 113 M.S., and 68 B.S. degrees expanding the department’s alumni base to over 6,700. more


2012 Outstanding Computer Science Seniors Recognized

Each year, the NC State College of Engineering recognizes students for their outstanding performance beyond academic achievement with Outstanding Senior Awards. Winners of the 2012 Computer Science Outstanding Senior Awards include Daniel Lauck, Alex Poulos, and Anne Watson. more

Grad School Extends Honors

Several graduate students from the NC State Computer Science Department were recognized recently for their participation in the University’s Preparing Future Leaders (PFL) programs. PFL programs provide a foundation for the lifelong professional development of graduate students and postdoctoral scholars. Since 2007, PFL has delivered 505 events to more than 10,000 participants. The PFL Celebration of Graduate Student Success honored participants who completed the Certificate of Accomplishment in Teaching program, the Mentoring and Teaching Practicum, the Preparing the Professoriate program, the Graduate Leadership Development Series, the Certificate in Career Development and the PFL Season Pass. more

Students Get Giant Screen Test

Hunt Jr. Library is still under construction on Centennial Campus, it’s already giving students hands-on experience with the gaming industry’s newest technology. During the spring semester, a team of 15 students studying industrial design, graphic design and computer game development got the chance to work together designing a video game on a prototype of the 21-foot-wide, high-definition video wall that will be the centerpiece of the library’s game lab. more

CSC Department Launches Student Ambassadors Program

The NC State Computer Science Department is pleased to announce the launch of the NC State University Department of Computer Science Student Ambassador Program. Twenty-four undergraduates were selected this spring as the first class of Ambassadors. They will begin their academic year of service with the Fall 2012 semester. more

Students Earn Best Paper Award at LREC Narrative Workshop

Congratulations to PhD students Rogelio Cardona-Rivera, Brad Cassell and Stephen Ware, advised by Dr. R. Michael Young, for winning Best Student Paper on a Cognitive Science Topic at the 2012 Workshop on Computational Models of Narrative co-located with the 2012 Language Resources and Evaluation Conference (LREC 2012) held in Istanbul, Turkey on May 26-27, 2012. more

Best Paper Award Presented at WiSec 2012

Congratulations to PhD students Michael Grace and Wu Zhou, and Dr. Xuxian Jiang, and Ahmad-Reza Sadeghi, professor at the Technical University Darmstadt in Darmstadt, Germany, for winning the Best Paper Award at the 5th ACM Conference on Security and Privacy in Wireless and Mobile Networks (WiSec 2012) held in Tucson, AZ on April 16-18, 2012. more

Departmental Gifts & Research

OPNET Technologies has donated $5,000 to the department in support of ePartners Programs related programs and initiatives during the 2012-13 academic year.

Christie Digital Systems has donated $2,500 to the department in sponsorship of the 2012 Game Development Showcase.

Credit Suisse has donated $2,500 to the department in sponsorship of the Women in Computer Science (WiCS) organization for the 2012-13 academic year.

Harris Corporation has donated $10,000 in support of ePartners Programs related programs and initiatives and college related outreach programs during the 2012-13 academic year.

Mark Evans has donated $1,000 to the Dr. Thomas L. Honeycutt Scholarship Endowment (including his corporate match). We are happy to report that 27 donors have contributed pledges and gifts of over $6,000 toward the creation of a named scholarship endowment in honor of retiring associate professor, Dr. Thomas Honeycutt. Every dollor donated through the end of June, 2012 will be matched, up to $50,000, by a generous pledge from alumnus, Bobby R. Johnson Jr., and his wife Donna. Dr. Frank Mueller has been awarded $33,333 by Securboration, Inc. to support his research proposal titled “Operating System Mechanisms for Many-Core Systems (PICASO).” more

Dr. Nagiza Samatova has received $149,999 from the National Science Foundation to support her research proposal titled “Analytics-driven Efficient Indexing and Query Processing of Extreme Scale AMR Data.” more

Dr. Xuxian Jiang has been awarded $125,000 by US Air Force – Research Laboratory (AFRL) to support his proposal titled “Comprehension-Driven Program Analysis (CPA) for Malware Detection in Android Phones.more

Dr. Munindar Singh has been awarded additional supplemental funding by the University of California-San Diego/National Science Foundation to support his research proposal titled “Policy-Based Governance for the OOI Cyberinfrastructure.” This $10,000 supplement brings the total funding for this project to $412,330. more

Dr. Tao Xie has been awarded supplemental funding by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to support his research proposal titled “II-EN: Infrastructure Support for Software Testing Research.” This $16,000 supplement brings the total funding for this project to $279,000. more

E-book publisher Bitingduck Press, based in Pasadena and Montreal, has merged with Raleigh, NC-based Boson Books for efficient, author- and reader-friendly electronic publishing. The press publishes fiction, narrative nonfiction, and technical books using the latest e-book formats and is open for author submissions.
