NC State Computer Science Professor Reaches New Heights

Photo of Dr. Annie AntónIn what she calls her ‘trip of a lifetime,’ Dr. Annie Antón, professor of computer science at NC State University, has just completed a successful trek to the summit of Kala Patthar at over 18,000 ft and the famed Everest Base Camp in Nepal. Antón and 21 other trekkers participated in “Trekking for Kids: the Nepal Trek 2010—Everest Base Camp” expedition, raising more than $55,000 for the Orphan Children Rescue Center (OCRC) in Bhaktapur, Nepal. more


Student Teams Make Strong Showing at ACM “Battle of the Brains” Contest

The NC State Computer Science Department sent three teams to compete in the 35th ACM “Battle of the Brains” contest. Team “NCSU3” came in 2nd at its test site; team “NCSU1” came in 4th at its site; and team “NCSU2” received an honorable mention. more

Ning Selected to Receive a 2011 IBM Open Collaborative Faculty Award

Dr. Peng Ning, professor of computer science at NC State University, has been selected to receive a 2011 IBM Open Collaborative Faculty Award valued at $75,000. This is the second renewal of Ning’s 2009 IBM Open Collaborative Faculty Award, which brings the total amount of the award to $275,000. more

NC State Names Three Finalists For Provost

North Carolina State University’s national search for a new provost is down to three finalists. The candidates visited campus for a final round of interviews and an open forum during the month of November. more

NC State and IBM Researchers Discover New Way to Patch Holes in The ‘Cloud’

North Carolina State University celebrated its achievements in innovation and entrepreneurship for 2010 – including 32 U.S. patents issued and four start-up companies launched – with the inaugural presentation of its Innovator of the Year and Entrepreneur of the Year awards. more

NC State Named Among Universities Most Friendly to Junior Faculty

North Carolina State University was named among 32 colleges and universities with the highest levels of junior faculty job satisfaction in a report issued this week by the Collaborative on Academic Careers in Higher Education (COACHE), a consortium of member institutions based at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education. more

Boyuka Gains Experience at Microsoft Research Asia in China

While in China, he worked on distributed query processing and scheduling in a cloud-computing environment designed to improve the efficiency of large data centers such as those affiliated with Microsoft, Google, and Amazon. more

Departmental Gifts & Research

IBM has awarded $30,000 to the department in support of a 2010 Ph.D. Fellowship for Ben Smith.

AT&T has donated $25,000 to the department in support of the Sr. Design Center and the ePartners Program

Vanguard has donated $5,000 to the department in support of the ePartners Program.

Dr. Injong Rhee has been awarded $50,000 by the Research Institute – Electronics & Telecommunications (ETRI) to support his research proposal titled “Investigation of Application Service Architectures for Future Internet Testbeds.” more

Dr. Christopher Healey has been awarded $18,392 by the UNC-Chapel Hill via Sandia National Laboratories to support his research proposal titled “Ensemble and Comparative Visualization of Scientific Datasets.” more

Congratulations to PhD student JeeHyun Hwang and Dr. Tao Xie, associate professor of computer science in the NC State University Department of Computer Science, who won the Best Student Paper Award at the 24th USENIX Large Installation System Administration Conference (USENIX LISA) in San Jose, California on November 10th. Hwang and Xie co-authored this paper with Fei Chen and Dr. Alex X. Liu from Michigan State University. more
