Bieringer CSC Nominee for Faculty Senior Scholarship Award

Photo of Alicia BieringerCongratulations to Alicia Bieringer, a senior majoring in computer science at NC State University, for being named the Computer Science Department nominee for the College of Engineering Faculty Senior Scholarship Award. The Faculty Senior Scholarship Award is one of the most prestigious undergraduate awards in the College of Engineering. Each year, every department in the College nominates one candidate to compete for the award. The nomination itself is an important recognition of a student's outstanding academic, extra-curricular, and community achievements. more


Young Named 2010 GSK Faculty Fellow

Dr. R. Michael Young has been named a 2010 GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) Faculty Fellow by the Institute for Emerging Issues (IEI). Faculty Fellow activities include everything from writing opinion pieces for North Carolina newspapers, to shaping IEI’s programs of work, particularly focusing on creativity this year, and offering expert advice to policy-makers. more

Fidelity Investments "Leadership in Technology" Series Presents Mike Torto

Gong and Smith Win 2010 IBM PhD Fellowships

Zhenhuan Gong and Ben Smith, graduate students in the computer science department at NC State University, were recently awarded prestigious 2010 IBM Ph.D. Fellowship Awards. Fellows are awarded tuition, fees, and a stipend for one academic year. The total value of the awards is estimated at $30,000. more

3D Map of Centennial Campus Now Available

The Centennial Campus website has two new views of the campus, thanks to Google Earth and concept3d. One view is a complete 3D map of all buildings on Centennial Campus. It also shows the locations of all parking decks, emergency phones and bus routes. To view the 3D map, you must download a Google Earth plug-in; otherwise, the map becomes 2D. A 3D Video tour of Centennial Campus is also available. more

$1 Billion in Value!

One year sooner than expected, the 1B4NC campaign has reached its goal, helping businesses in 75 of North Carolina’s 100 counties. more

Departmental Gifts & Research

Diagnostic Devices, Stella Nova Technologies & Thomson Reuters have each donated $5,000 in support of the Senior Design Center.

MemberHub.com has donated $1,000 in support of the department and the ePartners Program.

Alumnus, Keith Collins (B.S. 82), has donated a Rovio robot to the department, which will be used to support research and student projects

Dr. Edward Gehringer has been awarded $110,518 by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to support his research proposal titled “Production and Assessment of Student-authored Wiki Textbooks.” more

Faculty / Staff News

Congratulations to Dr. Doug Reeves who has been named the Director of Graduate Programs effective May 16th, replacing Dr. David Thuente who recently announced plans to step down from the role in order to return to teaching and research after a scholarly leave starting the fall semester 2010. Thuente has served as DGP since May 15, 2003 and played an instrumental role in the upward trajectory of our graduate program. He has been comtemplating this move for several years, but graciously delayed the decision until completion of the recent Graduate School evaluation process. We thank him for his outstanding service to the department, and wish him well as he returns to his faculty role.

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Michael Rappa has joined the department. Rappa is a Distinguished University Professor and founder and director of the Institute for Advanced Analytics (IAA) at NC State. In partnership with SAS Institute, he led the development of NC State's Master of Science in Analytics — the first such degree program of its kind in the nation. more

Dr. Harry Perros has made his e-book entitled “Computer Simulation Techniques: The definitive introduction!” available for free download through his website. more

Congratulations to Dr. Robert St. Amant and his former student, alumnus Reuben Cornel (MS ’09), along with collaborator Jeff Shrager (Stanford University and CollabRx) for having their paper entitled “Collaboration and Modeling in CogLaborate" selected for a Best Paper Award at the Behavior Representation in Modeling & Simulation (BRIMS) Conference. more
