Lester Named Goodnight Distinguished Professor

Dr. James LesterDr. James Lester, professor in the Department of Computer Science at North Carolina State University, has been named as the inaugural Goodnight Distinguished University Professor in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. Lester has spent his career leading efforts to transform the field of education using artificial intelligence and leads two NC State centers dedicated to this work. He is the founding director of NC State’s Center for Educational Informatics. In 2021, the National Science Foundation (NSF) built on those efforts by awarding Lester and a team of faculty members from NC State and other partner institutions a five-year, $20 million grant that established the NSF AI Institute for Engaged Learning. Battestilli Recognized for Excellence in Teaching

Dr. Lina Battestilli

Congratulations to Dr. Lina Battestilli, who has been recognized by NC State University with an Outstanding Teacher Award. The award recognizes excellence in teaching at all levels. Faculty must receive the Outstanding Teacher Award in order to be eligible for the Board of Governors Award for Excellence in Teaching, the Provost’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, and the Alumni Distinguished Undergraduate Professor Award. Recipients of the Outstanding Teacher Award become members of the Academy of Outstanding Teachers for as long as they remain NC State faculty. Read More »


NC State Part of $20M AI Institute Focusing on Climate-smart Agriculture and Forestry

Dr. Raju Ranga VatsavaiNC State is one of six universities to become part of a five-year $20M grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) to lead a new National Artificial Intelligence Research Institute. NC State’s portion of the grant is $500,000, and lead researcher on the project is Computer Science professor Dr. Raju Ranga Vatsavai. Read More »


Richards Named 2022-2023 PEP Award Winner

Donna RichardsCongratulations to Donna Richards, Assistant Director of Research Administration in the NC State Computer Science Department, on being selected as 2022-23 recipient of the “Person of Exceptional Performance” (PEP) Award. Short staffed and in leadership transition, Richards led the CSC Contracts & Grants group to help our faculty submit new grant proposals at record rates, while research expenditures were at a record high. Select Departmental Gifts & Support

Dr. Ed Gehringer has donated $22,000 to the department in unrestricted support.

David and Karen Whitley have donated $10,000 to the department in support of the Computer Science Enhancement Endowment.

Brigid and Erik Troan have donated $62,500 to the department in support of the Troan Scholarship for Computer Science.

Diveplane has provided an unrestricted research award to Dr. Tim Menzies valued at $50,000 in support of his RAISE Lab.

Team Wins XPRIZE Challenge Grand Prize - Dr. Thomas Price, Assistant Professor in Computer Science and Director of the HINTS lab at NC State, is part of a team called the Adaptive Experimentation Accelerator, that won the US$500,000 grand prize in the XPRIZE Digital Learning Challenge grand prize. Price will share the grand prize with colleagues from the University of Toronto and Carnegie Mellon University. Read More »

Celebrating the Spring 2023 CSC Graduates! - Congratulations to the nearly 400 BS, MS, and PhD candidates who celebrated their graduation during the Computer Science Department’s Spring 2023 Diploma Ceremony held May 4th in NC State’s Reynolds Coliseum. Read More »

Pop Quiz: AI Matches Human Performance at Developing Good Test Questions - Dr. Noboru Matsuda, associate professor of computer science at NC State, and other researchers have developed an AI model that can generate online course assessment questions that instructors found indistinguishable from questions written by humans. Jerin Smith Receives the CoE Senior Award for Humanities - Jerin Smith, a recent NC State graduate who double-majored in computer science and Japanese, was recognized by the College of Engineering with the Senior Award for Humanities. Read More »

Abdelshiheed Named CoE Doctoral Scholar of the Year - Mark Abdelshiheed, whose research interests are in the field of cognitive science and artificial intelligence in education, is a skilled researcher with novel and creative ideas, and a 4.2 cumulative GPA. Read More »

How Crime Shows Inspired Molly Sun to Pursue Cybersecurity - Sun, who majored in computer science and economics, moved to North Carolina from Shandong, China. Her desire to pursue computer science came from two places: her loved ones and crime drama series. Read More »

Congratulations to Nikhil Milind, who was recently selected as one of 85 new 2023 Knight-Hennessy Scholars at Stanford University. Nikhil is a first-year PhD student in genetics at the Stanford School of Medicine. He holds bachelor’s degrees in computer science and genetics from NC State University and an MPhil in biological sciences from the University of Cambridge. Read More »

Our deepest condolences go out to the family of CSC alum Conen Morgan, who died recently in a tragic boating accident. Morgan was formerly the president of the Young Democrats of North Carolina and worked on political campaigns, notably as the campaign manager for Congressman Bob Etheridge. Read More »

We welcome Jignasa Patel as our newest Sponsored Research Administrator effective June 1st. She will manage the portfolio of the CSI Center, among others. We are very excited to have her on our team!

The Alumni Association has partnered with the University Career Development Center to make ePACK available to NC State alumni. If you are a current Alumni Association member, update your online profile by visiting the Wolfpack Connect (alumni directory) and click on the ‘Update My Info’ tab on the upper right side of the page. Select the ‘Career Connections’ tab and then choose ‘yes’ beside the question, ‘Do you want access to ePACK?’

To access ePACK you must be a member of the Alumni Association and you must be an alumnus/alumnae of NC State. If you are not a member of the Alumni Association, you can join online. Once you have received an email confirming your membership, you will be able to register for access to ePACK.
