Department Hosts Inaugural Fidelity Investments Executive Speakers Series Event

The NC State Department of Computer Science hosted the inaugural Fidelity Investments “Leadership in Technology” Executive Speakers Series event on September 11 in Engineering Building II on NC State’s Centennial Campus. Stephen Scullen, President of Fidelity eBusiness, was the inaugural executive speaker in the series, providing an engaging talk on “The Evolution of the Web in Financial Services”. more

Departmental Research Grants, Gifts, and Support

Alumnus Tony Brown (B.S. CSC ’83) and his wife, Kathy (B.A. English ’83), have made a generous $3,000 contribution to the ‘40@40 Scholarship Endowment’ Campaign.  Total gifts to this special campaign are approaching $5,000.

Butler & Curless Associates has renewed its commitment as an ePartner, and has pledged $2,500 in sponsorship of the department’s 40th Year Technical Symposium.

Dr. Tao Xie, assistant professor of computer science at NC State University, has been recognized with a Microsoft Faculty Award valued at $15,000.

Dr. Franc Brglez has been awarded $ 43,320 by the Army Research Office to fund his proposal titled “Triangle Computer Science Distinguished Lecturer Series Sponsor - Army Research Office.. more

Dr. Peng Ning has been awarded $28,500 by the National Science Foundation to fund his research proposal titled “Collaborative Research: CT-T: A Resilient Real-Time System For a Secure and Reconfigurable Power Grid.more

Congratulations to doctoral candidate Chris Hazard and Dr. Peter Wurman, as their paper entitled “The Game of Scale: Decision-Making with Economies of Scale,” won the Best Managerial Paper Award at the Ninth International Conference on Electronic Commerce (ICEC) 2007 held August 19-22 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. more

40th Year Technical Symposium Scheduled for October 25th – Registration Open Now

Plans for our 40th Year Technical Symposium on Oct 25th are complete and available for viewing online at http://www.csc.ncsu.edu/40th/techsym.php. This day-long event (9 am – 4 pm in 1025 EBII) will be a celebration of our past and a look toward the future of computing.  Our confirmed keynote speakers will be Dr. Dorothy Strickland, Dr. Larry Hodges, Dr. Al Aho, and Steve Wozniak, technology icon and co-founder of Apple Computer. Space is limited, and pre-registration for this event via the page above is required.

NOTE: A special student reception and book-signing event with Mr. Wozniak will take place on the Masnari Gateway at EBII (outside in open area in the center of the building), following the Tech Symposium’s conclusion at 4 pm.

40th Year Tailgate Order Deadline is Oct 1st

All CSC Alumni are invited to join us for our 40th Year Tailgate Party for the October 27th Homecoming Game against UVA.  Enjoy a tailgate spread featuring BBQ, fried chicken, and all the fixin’s.  The tailgate area will be located near the Fan Zone next to the RBC Center and will open 2&1/2 hours prior to kickoff. Tailgate only and ticket/tailgate options are available.  Deadline to order ticket package is October 1st and deadline for ordering Tailgate only package is October 12th (order link).

ePartners Career Connection Event Set for October 2nd

Our annual ePartners Career Connection recruiting event is scheduled for Tuesday, October 2nd from 12 noon to 4:00 pm in EBII in the atrium and main hallway outside the classrooms in the east wing (the CSC side of the building).  Many of our valued ePartners will be on hand for this exclusive recruiting event, and they will be looking for excellent candidates to fill their coop, intern, and new grad openings.  Companies committed to participate this year's event include: Network Appliance, Cisco Systems, EMC, Progress Energy, Duke Energy, Tekelec, Red Hat, Strategic Technologies, Vanguard, Prometheus Group, IBM, and Fidelity Investments. Students are encouraged to bring their resumes and be prepared to explore career goals and opportunities with company representatives.

Online Auction is Now Live – Proceeds to Benefit New CSC Scholarship Endowment

Check out our first-ever online auction to raise money for a new 40th Year Scholarship Endowment. The bidding officially began on Sept 15th and will close on Oct 31st. Items up for bid include autographed NC State sports memorabilia, gift certificates to local restaurants and stores, trips and weekend getaways, and several unique collectables and experiences.  Anyone can register and bid, so forward this information to your family and friends.  We will continue to accept donations and add them to the auction site throughout the bidding period, so visit often and bid high…it’s for a great cause!

Geek-a-Thon Set for October 5-7 – Limited # of Volunteer Slots Still Available

Geekathon LogoAs part of our 40th Year Celebration, the ACM/AITP and WiCS student organizations, in association with the NC State Department of Computer Science and the Kramden Institute, Inc., and in partnership with Centennial Campus Middle School, will host a Geek-a-Thon the weekend of October 5-7, 2007.  Primary sponsors of the event include the NC chapter of the Society for Information Management (Platinum Sponsor), The Pantry / Kangaroo (Gold Sponsor), Cisco Systems (Silver Sponsor) and the Raleigh Chapter of Information Systems Security Association (Bronze Sponsor).  A Geek-a-Thon is a weekend long event where computers are refurbished and then donated to help high-achieving, but less-advantaged middle school students in Wake County cross the digital divide.  Volunteers are needed for a variety of duties (technical & non-technical) during the event.  Sign up for a shift that is convenient to you. Volunteers will receive all necessary training, be well fed with free food and refreshments, receive a cool “Geek-a-thon” tee-shirt, and have a blast knowing they are helping someone in need.  To sign up, visit the event web page.

ISSA InfoSec Conference - October 18

Students, faculty & staff are invited to participate in the Raleigh ISSA’s annual InfoSec Conference scheduled for October 18th at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Cary.  Student registration is only $10 and faculty/staff is $40.
