Fall 2021: CSC 236 Announcement

Effective August 2021, there are changes regarding CSC 236 that will impact our degrees, minor, and certificate. The content of the course is being moved to other courses and CSC 236 material will be revamped to be more security-focused. We have outlined these changes for each of the programs we offer, below. Please click on the program you are interested in below to find out more information on how it has been impacted.

CSC Major - No Concentration

Effective August 2021, for the Bachelor of Science in Computer Science degree, CSC 236 will move from a “required” class to a “CSC Restricted Elective” class.

There are now three additional hours of “Other Restricted Elective” in the degree.

What does this mean for CSC majors?

  • If you have already taken CSC 236 or ECE 109, no change will be made to your degree audit.
  • If you have not taken CSC 236, then you will be given an updated degree audit - no action is needed on your part.
    • Degree audit updates will take place throughout the 2021 - 2022 Academic Year.
  • Students who will pursue the Computer Science major with no concentration will now have a fourth “Other Restricted Elective” slot to fulfill instead of CSC 236, though CSC 236 may fulfill this requirement.
    • CSC 236 may count as a “CSC Restricted Elective” or an “Other Restricted Elective”.
    • Keep in mind that only 3 hours of “Other Restricted Electives” may be at the 200-level.
  • Beginning August 2021, CSC 246 will no longer have a required co-requisite of CSC 236.
    • Students who plan to take CSC 246 in Summer 2021 will still need CSC 236 as a co-requisite (meaning it can be taken before or at the same time).
  • Beginning August 2021, ECE 109 will no longer be accepted as an equivalent to CSC 236.
