Why a Career In Technology Matters for Women
Abstract: There is an outdated belief that girls are not as good at science and math subjects as boys, but according to the report Generation STEM, high school girls earn more math and science credits than boys do, and their GPAs, aggregated across math and science classes, are higher than boys. Still, these stereotypes can hold girls back and question their abilities. The implications are that we need the power of the AND, that is great male advocates for women pursuing a career in technology AND women who want to do so. Monique Morrow, CTO of Cisco Services , and will show you why a career in Technology is an excellent opportunity for our industry; and why it matters. Simply put: 'If you can't see it, you can't be it!'
Speaker Bio
Monique Morrow is the CTO - Evangelist New Frontiers Development and Engineering for Cisco. In her role, she works at the intersection between economics, technology and research that can be mapped to Cisco’s portfolio like exponential, circular economics and the Tactile Internet as examples. Defining mechanisms and marketplace scenarios for cloud federation constructs to include security are additional areas that she is focused on.
Morrow was engaged with Cisco during the start-up days in the mid-1980s and has since returned to Cisco. Her unique 14+ year journey has taken her from Customer Advocacy to Corporate Consulting Engineering, with an emphasis on the Service Provider Segment. She has even held a position in the field [Asia-Pacific], where her goal was to not only build a technology team but to also train her successor as she transitioned her duties.
Morrow bet on MPLS as a technology service enabler and was proven right. She was one of the leaders in the development of this critical business opportunity for Cisco in the Service Provider segment, Service Provider Next Gen Network (SP NGN).
Under Cisco’s Office of the CTO, both as an individual contributor and manager, Morrow built a strong leadership team in Asia-Pacific. Her specific geo-area targets were China and India. Her role in these important regions drove Cisco’s globalization and country strategies and met all of her targeted goals.
Morrow has consistently demonstrated the willingness and courage to take risks and explore new market opportunities for Cisco. These innate qualities are part of her DNA and are of great value to the company and all the global organizations in which she is involved.
A passionate champion for women in technology, Morrow has been decorated with numerous awards for her efforts including being named a Global Achiever for the ITU and UN Women 2014 GEM-TECH Award, recipient of the 2014 IEEE Region 8 Women in Engineering Clementina Saduwa Award, and she was recently recognized as one of the 2014 Top Ten Influential IT Women in Europe.
Morrow has 8 patent submissions filed and holds five patents issued by the US Patent Office. She has authored several books and journal publications, and speaks frequently at conferences around the globe. She serves on countless boards and professional associations with industry influence including the Computer Science department’s Strategic Advisory Board at NC State University.
She holds several degrees from around the world including a M.S. in Telecommunications Management from Golden Gate University in San Francisco and a MBA from City University in Zurich, Switzerland. She currently resides in Zurich, Switzerland.
