Galloway to Attend 2009 Google Summer Institute

Kamar Galloway, a freshman in the NC State computer science department, has been selected to attend the 2009 Google Computer Science Summer Institute (CSSI).  Twenty aspiring computer scientists were selected to attend the all-expenses-paid CSSI at Google’s headquarters in Mountain View, California, from August 2-14, 2009.

This special institute will include an interactive and collaborative computer science curriculum, as well as unique residential experience in which students can build a network with other attendees.  They will meet alumni from their schools, and other Google engineers while immersing themselves in daily life at Google’s headquarters, the “Googleplex.”  Students will also enjoy technical talks by Google employees, lectures by guests from across the technology industry, and social activities around the Bay Area.

Program goals include:

  • Enriching the skills of students early in their computer science studies in an effort to increase the pipeline into the computer science major and/or boost retention in the major
  • Providing a social and professional network for underrepresented populations (women, Hispanic, African-American, and/or Native-American students) in technology
  • Empowering students, giving them tools, motivation and confidence to continue with computer science studies
  • Showing students daily life at Google and the amazing applications of computer science that are taking place

In this program, students will experience a multi-faceted view of computer science that reflects its broad range of domain and application areas.  They will learn about all aspects of computer science, from its impact on our society and culture to the role it plays in our work and personal lives.

Kamar, who is from Charlotte, is also one of two NC State students who received the 2008-09 Cisco Internet Generation Scholarship (CIGS)

He is being mentored by Dr. Tao Xie through an Undergraduate Research Grant provided by the College of Engineering and the Computer Science Department in Spring, 2009.
