Williams & Vouk Receive STARS Alliance Grant

Drs. Laurie Williams and Mladen Vouk of the department of computer science, along with co-PI, Dr. Sarah Berenson of the department of math, science and technology education at NC State University, have been awarded $188,492 by the National Science Foundation (NSF) via UNC-Charlotte to fund their joint proposal titled “BPC-AE: The STARS Alliance: A Southeastern Partnership for Diverse Participation in Computing.”

The award will run from February 1, 2008 through January 31, 2011.

Abstract - The proposed project is an extension of the BPC-A STARS Alliance.  Our goal continues to be to broaden participation in computing (BPC) through the STARS Alliance, a Southeastern partnership to implement, institutionalize and disseminate effective practices for recruiting, bridging, retaining and graduating women, under-represented minorities and persons with disabilities into computing disciplines.  With this proposal, additional academic institutions will join the STARS Alliance. NC State will continue to work with our own Student Leadership Corps, and with our demonstration and evaluation tasks, and it will act as the initial mentor for the new regional institutions.
