US Dept. of Energy Supports Samatova's Research

Dr. Nagiza Samatova, associate professor of computer science at NC State University, has recently received $354,646 from the US Department of Energy to support her research proposal titled “Scalable Statistical Computing for Physical Science Applications.”

The award will run from December 2, 2011 to June 30, 2012.

Abstract:  Physical science applications such as nanoscience, fusion science, climate and biology generate large-scale data sets from their simulations and high throughput technologies. This necessitates scalable technologies for processing and analyzing this data. We plan to research and develop advanced data mining algorithms for knowledge discovery from this complex, high-dimensional, and noisy data. We will apply these technologies to DOE-mission scientific applications related to fusion energy, bioenergy, understanding the impacts of climate extremes, and insider threat detection and mitigation.
