Young Named a 2013 ACM Distinguished Scientist

Sullivan Named 2014 NCDS Faculty Fellow

Sullivan, assistant professor of computer science at NC State University, has been named a 2014 National Consortium for Data Science (NCDS) Data Science Faculty Fellow. She will receive $30,000 in support of her project "Tracking community evolution in dynamic graph data using tree-like structure." As a Data Science Faculty Fellow, Dr. Sullivan will have the opportunity to work with members of the consortium, leverage their expertise, and contribute to their vision of establishing a comprehensive data science that will enable our nation to take full advantage of the era of big data. more

IBM BlueMix Hackathon Allows Students to Experiment with Emerging Technology

IBM and the IBM jStart Team conducted a "hackathon" recently on campus to leverage student talent on IBM's next generation cloud platform, BlueMix, and to illustrate the ease and power of creating cloud applications on the new platform. The NC State University student chapters of the IEEE and ACM/AITP sponsored the event and seven teams of students competed to create the best BlueMix application. The winners of the hackathon, Shashank Chandre Gowda, Aaron Pope, and Charles Hensley (members of the Cloud Powered Team), developed an application called SMS4Twitter that allows users to set an alert that monitors tweets from a specific set of users, and looks for keywords the user is interested in real time. more

New Graduate Certificate in Professional Communication and Managerial Skills

CSC alumni and graduate students take note. NC State has recently launched a Graduate Certificate in Professional Communication and Managerial Skills (PCOM), which offers you a set of courses that will enhance your understanding of management and communication principles. This knowledge will allow you to transfer your achievements in the laboratory to success in your organization and in the global marketplace. Many Android Vulnerabilities Can Be Traced to Manufacturer Modifications

Photo of Dr. Xuxian JiangLed by Dr. Xuxian Jiang, computer security researchers at NC State have found that Android smartphone manufacturers are inadvertently incorporating new vulnerabilities into their products when they customize the phones before sale, according to a recent study. On average, the researchers found that 60 percent of the vulnerabilities found in the smartphone models they evaluated were due to such “vendor customizations. more

NC State Partners With N.C. Office of Information Technology Services

An agreement between NC State and the N.C. Office of Information Technology Services (OITS) will provide students with real-world learning opportunities and allow state government to develop a pipeline of talent for its IT operations. The first project is already under way at the Innovation Center, where students from NC State’s Department of Computer Science are working to improve the state’s digital presence. more

Fall 2013 Diploma Ceremony Planned for December 18th

The NC State University Computer Science Department will hold its fall diploma ceremony on Wednesday, December 18th at 2:00 p.m. in the main sanctuary at Providence Baptist Church, located at 6339 Glenwood Avenue, Raleigh (directions). We are honored to have Gregory Germain, Vice President at NetApp, serve as our keynote speaker. Approximately 170 graduates are expected to receive their degrees during the ceremony. Our special thanks go to the NC State Engineering Foundation and the ePartners Program for their generous sponsorship of this event. more

Smarter Searching

Dr. Kemafor AnyanwuLed by Dr. Kemafor Anyanwu, NC State researchers have developed a way for search engines to provide users with more accurate, personalized search results. The challenge in the past has been how to scale this approach up so that it doesn’t consume massive computer resources. Now the researchers have devised a technique for implementing personalized searches that is more than 100 times more efficient than previous approaches. more

Hunt Library Offers Blasts to the Past

If it’s not quite time travel, it’s the closest to it you’ll experience anytime soon. The Virtual Paul’s Cross installation in the Teaching and Visualization Lab at the Hunt Library is a prime example of how innovative scholarship can combine simulation, display and audio technologies to invigorate teaching and research and push the boundaries of the digital humanities. more

Departmental Gifts & Research

NVIDIA has donated equipment valued at $2,675 in support of Dr. Frank Mueller, which will be used to support research and teaching efforts associated with the NVIDIA CUDA Teaching Center and the NVIDIA CUDA Research Center.

Cisco Systems has made a $20,000 gift to the department as a significant investment toward establishing multiple diversity-related scholarships to benefit computer science students. more

Juniper Networks has donated $10,000 in support of the department’s ePartners Program and Senior Design Center.

Bandwidth has donated $5,000 in support of the department’s Senior Design Center.

The Prometheus Group has donated $2,500 in support of the department and our ePartners Program.

Expion has donated $2,500 in support of the department and our ePartners Program.

Harris Corp has donated $1,500 in support of the Women in Computer Science program as part of a larger gift to the College of Engineering.

Dr. Frank Mueller has been awarded $300,000 by Sandia National Laboratories via US Department of Energy to support his research proposal entitled “Hobbes: OS and Runtime Support for Application Composition” and $153,934 by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory via US Department of Energy for his project, "Resilience for Global Address Spaces." more

Dr. Peng Ning was recently awarded $749,996 by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to study the changing security landscape in the new era of cloud computing. Dr. Ning's project will also work to provide a new approach to cloud architecture that will mitigate these risks, as well as address long-standing threats. The study is titled: "TWC: Frontier: Collaborative: Rethinking Security in the Era of Cloud Computing." more

Dr. Tiffany Barnes has been awarded $352,831 by the National Science Foundation (NSF) for her collaborative research project titled: "Framing a Rigorous Approach to Beauty and Joy for Outreach to Underrepresented Students in Computing at Scale (FRABJOUS)". more
