Securing the Cloud - Collaboratively!

Dr. Peng Ning, professor of computer science at NC State University,  was recently awarded $749,996 by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to study the changing security landscape in the new era of cloud computing. Dr. Ning's project will also work to provide a new approach to cloud architecture that will mitigate these risks, as well as address long-standing threats. The study is titled: "TWC: Frontier: Collaborative: Rethinking Security in the Era of Cloud Computing."

The award will run September 1, 2013 through August 31, 2018.

Abstract: Increased use of cloud computing services is becoming a reality in today's IT management. The security risks of this move are active research topics, yielding cautionary examples of attacks enabled by the co-location of competing tenants. In this project, we propose to mitigate such risks through a new approach to cloud architecture defined by leveraging cloud providers as trusted (but auditable) security enablers. We will exploit cooperation between cloud providers and tenants in preventing attacks as a means to tackle long-standing open security problems, including protection of tenants against outsider attacks, improved intrusion detection and security diagnosis and security-monitoring inlays.
