Singh named SAS Institute Distinguished Professor of Computer Science

Dr. Munindar SinghDr. Munindar Singh, Alumni Distinguished Graduate Professor in the Department of Computer Science at North Carolina State University, has been named the SAS Institute Distinguished Professor of Computer Science. Singh, who joined the NC State faculty in 1995, conducts research into artificial intelligence (AI) and multiagent systems. He is a Fellow of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Association for Computing Machinery and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and a foreign member of Academia Europaea. He has won the ACM/SIGAI Autonomous Agents Research Award, the IEEE TCSVC Research Innovation Award and the IFAAMAS Influential Paper Award. To date, Singh has authored or co-authored more than 200 papers in peer-reviewed journals and conferences, secured more than $20M in external research support, directed and graduated 30 Ph.D. dissertations, and has been awarded 45 patents. Guo Receives ACM SIGBED Early Career Award

Dr. Zhishan GuoCongratulations to Dr. Zhishan Guo, associate professor in the NC State Computer Science Department, on winning the 2023 Association for Computing Machinery Special Interest Group on Embedded Systems (ACM SIGBED) Early Career Award. Pande Receives Prestigious NSF Graduate Research Fellowship

Jay PandeCongratulations to Jay Pande on being chosen to receive a prestigious and highly competitive National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship. Pande graduated from Duke University in 2020, and is currently a second year PhD student in Computer Science at NC State. His research interests focus on using artificial intelligence to support adaptive learning environments that embrace principles of universal design for learning. Read More »


Select Departmental Gifts & Support

Pendo has provided $12,500 in support to the department as sponsorship of a special Cybersecurity Practicum.

Delmont Systems has donated $3,500 in unrestricted funds to support the academic research of Dr. Rudra Dutta.

David Perkins has donated $2,000 to the KC Tai Memorial Endowment.

Erik & Brigid Troan have donated $2,500 to the Troan Scholarship for Computer Science – Income Fund.

Tony McLean Brown and the Brown Family have donated $250,000 as part of a larger $1M multi-year pledge. This installment will launch the Tony McLean Brown Graduate Fellowship Enhancement for Computer Science and the Ken Tate Scholarship for Student Success in Computer Science.

Fitness App Loophole Allows Access to Home Addresses - Despite attempts to anonymize user data, the fitness app Strava allows anyone to find personal information – including home addresses – about some users. The finding, which is detailed in a new study, raises significant privacy concerns. “Strava users expect their personal information to be protected, and our work shows that this is not always the case,” says Anupam Das, senior author of a paper on the work and an assistant professor of computer science at North Carolina State University. “This could be particularly problematic for users who are concerned about stalkers or have other reasons to desire that their location data be kept from the public.” Read More »

New AI Boosts Teamwork Training - Researchers at NC State have developed a new artificial intelligence (AI) framework that is better than previous technologies at analyzing and categorizing dialogue between individuals, with the goal of improving team training technologies. The framework will enable training technologies to better understand how well individuals are coordinating with one another and working as part of a team. Read More »

Better Than He Found It - After 17 years, Louis Martin-Vega will be stepping down as the dean of the College of Engineering at the end of the summer. He leaves behind him a strong legacy of philanthropy, having successfully guided the college through the university’s recent Think and Do the Extraordinary Campaign while also overseeing a period of significant growth in student enrollment, faculty size, national reputation, research productivity and diversity among its faculty and student body. The Download: Erik Troan, Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer, Pendo - Get to know CSC alum and Hall of Fame inductee - Erik Troan – in this feature interview by GrepBeat. Erik is the Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer of Pendo, a venture-backed software company headquartered in downtown Raleigh. He started his career at Red Hat, where he worked as its first engineer and led the engineering team through the development of Linux, RPM and Anaconda, and eventually, the company’s IPO. He later led product marketing at Red Hat and assisted in the acquisition and integration of nine other companies. Erik went on to found rPath in 2005, which sold to SAS in 2012. He earned a bachelor’s degree in computer science and engineering from NC State University and a master’s degree in economics from the University of Virginia. Read More »

Park Scholarships Announces the Class of 2027 - The Park Scholarships program has named 40 students to its Class of 2027 - the 28th class of Park Scholars. The group includes eight students (20% of the class) who have expressed an intent to study computer science! The Park Scholarships program provides a four-year scholarship valued at approximately $117,000 for in-state students and approximately $215,000 for out-of-state students. Read More »

We welcome Kimberly Zak as our Assistant Departmental Human Resources Manager effective June 12th. She has over 6 years of experience in the HR field. In her most recent position, she was the Human Resources Specialist in Materials Science & Engineering. We are very excited to have Kim join our team!

Ouafae Haddouchi, our CSC IT Web Developer, who has accepted a new position outside of the University and her last day with the department was June 19th. We wish the very best for Ouafae on her new position and thank her for her contributions to the department.
