Software Availability in CSC Department:
Adobe:
Adobe Acrobat 9.0 Professional (NEW)
The department of Computer Science is now participating in the Adobe Term Site License for Acrobat. With the Adobe Term Site License, our department is entitled to have Mac/Win Acrobat 9.0 Professional installed on any departmental-owned computer at not cost to the faculty or staff.
Adobe Acrobat is used to create, edit, and merge PDF files.
To request installation email us at help@csc.ncsu.edu.
Adobe Flex Builder 3 Pro is also available for free to all eduction customers. This includes all students, faculty and staff of eligible education institutions. More information can be found here: https://freeriatools.adobe.com
All other Adobe Products must be paid for per user. Researchers will need to cover the cost of purchasing all Adobe products.
- The University has an agreement with Adobe to get products at a greatly reduced rate.
- If graduate students need Adobe, a license will need to be purchased for each graduate student machine.
- Faculty are allowed to install Adobe products on one work (departmentally owned) and one home (personally owned) machine. We cannot install the software on two work machines with only one license.
- Adobe licenses include a license certificate with a license key. Faculty members should hold onto this certificate as the key is required to install any software.
- Adobe licenses do not include media. If the IT Staff already has media, we can loan it to faculty members to install the software. Otherwise, the faculty member will need to purchase the media for an additional cost.
- All Adobe products under the agreement as well as pricing can be found here: http://www.ciacentral.com/ncadobe/interact3.htm
Adobe Acrobat Alternatives:
Adobe Acrobat is used to create, edit, and merge PDF files. People often do not need all of this functionality.
- If you only want to create PDF files from Microsoft Office Documents (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc) Office 2007 has a free plug-in that will allow you to create PDF files without having to purchase Adobe Acrobat. It will not allow you to edit PDF files, but you can edit the Office document, and then re-create the PDF file.
- If you are running a Mac, you can print any file to a PDF without buying Adobe Acrobat. The capability is built right into the operating system.
- If you are running a machine with Windows XP, you can use PDFCreator. It is a free software that creates a PDF write as a printer object.
