Whitmire, Posch Winners at Undergraduate Research Symposium

Two undergraduate students with connections to the NC State Department of Computer Science were winners at the 22nd Annual NC State University Undergraduate Research Symposium on April 10, 2013. Eric Whitmire, a Computer Science and Biomedical Engineering major mentored by Dr. Alper Bozkurt in the NC State Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, won with his project titled, “Test Platform for Automated Control of Terrestrial Insect Biobots.” Marie-Louise Posch, a Biology major mentored by Drs. Donald Bitzer and Robert Rodman in the NC State Computer Science Department, won with her project titled, “Speaker Identification of a Ventriloquist Through Her Puppet Voices.” more

Department Confers 207 Degrees During Spring Diploma Ceremony

Photo of May 2013 CSC graduateThe Spring 2013 Diploma Ceremony on May 10th at Providence Baptist Church was one of the largest on record for the department. This graduating class included 9 Ph.D., 98 M.S., and 99 B.S. degrees expanding the department’s alumni base to over 7,000. Alumnus Nate Johnson, meteorologist and executive producer at WRAL-TV, delivered the keynote address. more

Alumna Bushra Anjum Selected to Attend Heidelberg Laureate Forum

Bushra Anjum, a 2012 PhD graduate from the NC State Department of Computer Science, has been selected as one of 200 of the most qualified young researchers from all over the world to attend the first Heidelberg Laureate Forum. The Forum will take place September 22-27, 2013 in Heidelberg, Germany. More than 600 young researchers applied for the Forum. Anjum is one of 200 of the most qualified young researchers in the fields of mathematics and computer science who were chosen to attend. more

Department Launches NC State CSC Aspirations Award

Photo of Ruchee ShoreyThe department is pleased to announce that Ruchee Shorey, a senior at David W. Butler High School in Charlotte, is the recipient of the inaugural NC State Computer Science Aspirations Scholarship Award. The new Aspirations Award has been launched in conjunction with the National Center for Women in Technology (NCWIT) and has been designated to go annually to a high school student who wins a national or regional NCWIT Aspirations Award and who attends NC State University to pursue a degree in computer science. The $1,000 award is renewable for a total of four years as long as the student maintains acceptable academic progress toward a B.S. degree in computer science. more

Li and Xie Win IEEE Software Award for Best SEIP Paper

Congratulations to PhD student Sihan Li and Dr. Tao Xie, associate professor of computer science in the NC State Department of Computer Science, for winning the 2013 IEEE Software Best Software Engineering in Practice (SEIP) Paper Award at the International Conference on Software Engineering (ICSE 2013) to be held in San Francisco, CA on May 18-26, 2013. more

Taste of Engineering Event Draws Record Number of Attendees

Photo of  studentsMore than 250 students, faculty and staff in the College of Engineering at NC State packed EB2 on Centennial Campus recently for “Taste of Engineering,” an annual event hosted by the Women in Engineering program. The event encourages female students to pursue science, technology and engineering at the university. Attendees who wanted to learn more about computer science created binary code necklaces. more

Rhee Wins 2013 William R. Bennett Prize

Congratulations to Dr. Injong Rhee, professor of computer science at NC State University, on having his co-authored paper selected to receive the 2013 IEEE Communications Society William R. Bennett Prize in the Field of Communications Networking. The prize is given to the best paper published in any journal sponsored by the IEEE Communications Society in the previous three years. more

After eight years with the department, Susan Peaslee has accepted a Systems and Compliance Accountant position in the NC State Office of Contracts and Grants. We wish her the best in her new role!.

The department is pleased to announce that Dr. Blair Sullivan will be joining our department as an Assistant Professor starting this fall. Her expertise includes algorithm design, high performance graph analysis, parallel computing, combinatorial scientific computing, and graph theory. bio
