Barnes Spreading the Beauty and Joy of Computing

Dr. Tiffany BarnesCongratulations to Dr. Tiffany Barnes, associate professor of computer science at NC State University, on receiving $86,000 in additional funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF). This supplement supports her collaborative research project titled FRABJOUS CS - Framing a Rigorous Approach to Beauty and Joy for Outreach to Underrepresented Students in Computing at Scale. The total funding is $438,831, and the project has been extended to February 28, 2016. more

Chirkova & Vouk Receive 2014 IBM Faculty Awards

The NC State Department of Computer Science is proud to announce that two members of its faculty, Drs. Rada Chirkova and Mladen Vouk have been selected to receive 2014 IBM Faculty Awards totaling $60,000. IBM Faculty Awards recognize outstanding faculty achievement and are renewable annually. But in keeping with the competitive spirit of the program, renewal nominations must be submitted and supported by an IBM technical sponsor and evaluated in the same process and criteria as the first award. more

Novitsky Receives NC State CSC Aspirations Award

Melissa NovitskyThe NC State Computer Science Department is pleased to announce that Melissa Novitsky, a recent graduate of Athens Drive High School in Raleigh, is the recipient of the 2014 NC State Computer Science Aspirations Scholarship Award. The$1,000 award was launched last year in conjunction with the National Center for Women in Technology (NCWIT), and is given annually to a high school student who wins a national or regional NCWIT Aspirations in Computing Award, and who attends NC State University to pursue a degree in computer science. more

What do Foundry Networks, HowStuffWorks.com, and the Toontastic iPad app have in common? They are all examples of the entrepreneurial spirit of NC State CSC alumni! As we prepare for our 50th year celebrations in 2017, we are trying to gather a comprehensive list of NC State CSC alumni (and faculty) who have started companies or created a recognizable product, app or feature. Research Funding Sets New Record

As NC State closes the books on the 2013-14 fiscal year, the university reports that it set a record for new sponsored research awards, new research awards from industry and new research proposals. The record $304.5M in new sponsored research for NC State is even more impressive in that it doesn’t include $165M in research funding that was announced earlier this year. more

[Editors Note – the department of computer science finished the year in equally impressive style, amassing $14.3M in new research awards, supplemental funding and incremental funding, up 130% over 2012-13!]

Top Award for Economic Impact

NC State has made a name for itself as an innovative university that creates economic prosperity — and now it’s been officially recognized for it. APLU, the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities, has designated NC State as an Innovation and Economic Prosperity University. The designation recognizes universities that work with public- and private-sector partners to support economic development through innovation and entrepreneurship, technology transfer, talent and workforce development, and community development. more

Centennial Welcomes Marriott Hotel

Marriott Hotel RenderingCentennial Campus will be the site of a privately managed hotel and conference facility that will operate under the Marriott Autograph Collection franchise, university officials have announced. The $28 million facility is expected to open with 155 rooms and 7,500 square feet of meeting space with the potential to add up to 75 additional rooms and another 7,500 square feet of meeting space in the future. The hotel, which is slated to open in 2016, will overlook Lake Raleigh and sit adjacent to the Park Alumni Center. more

Crossing the Goal Line: New Tech Tracks Football in 3-D Space

Referees may soon have a new way of determining whether a football team has scored a touchdown or gotten a first down. Researchers from North Carolina State University and Carnegie Mellon University, in collaboration with Disney Research, have developed a system that can track a football in three-dimensional space using low-frequency magnetic fields. more

MetLife has donated $25,000 in support of the department’s ePartners Program and Senior Design Center.

Boeing has donated $25,000 in support of the department’s ePartners Program and Senior Design Center.

Deutsche Bank Global Technology has donated $25,000 in support of the department’s ePartners Program and Senior Design Center.

SAS has donated $25,000 in support of the department’s ePartners Program and Senior Design Center.

LexisNexis has donated $70,000 in unrestricted support of Dr. Vincent Freeh’s research project on “Big Data Low Latency Interactive NLP Query System” with HPCC.

Riverbed Technology has donated $7,500 in support of the department’s ePartners Program.

Hewlett-Packard Labs has donated $5,000 in support of the IEEE International Conference on Network Protocols (ICNP 2014), to be held in October and co-chaired by Dr. George Rourskas.

Spirent Communications has donated $5,000 in support of the department’s ePartners Program.

AirWatch has donated $2,500 in support of the department’s ePartners Program.

Bronto Software has donated $2,500 in support of the department’s ePartners Program.

XLOC has donated $2,500 in support of the department’s ePartners Program.

Xpient Solutions has donated $2,500 in support of the department’s ePartners Program.

To date, the department has received pledges & donations totaling almost $5,000 from numerous alumni and friends toward the launch of an endowment in the honor of retiring icon, Dr. Robert Fornaro. This month’s donations include $500 gifts from Ross Scroggs III and Glenda Riddle. All donations will be matched dollar-for-dollar, up to $25,000, by a generous pledge from Donna & Bobby R. Johnson Jr.

Dr. Kemafor Anyanwu Ogan has been awarded $16,067 by BOSH Global Services to support her research proposal entitled “Mobile Network Data Capture and Analytics Study.” more

Personalized Job Search Agent in ePack

If you are a CSC student or recent graduate (within 12 months post-graduation) and would like to receive email notifications when new jobs are posted on ePack matching your profile, you can set up your own customized job search agent to receive just the postings you desire (intern vs. full time, etc). For a short video tutorial on how to create your own personalized job agent, click here.

The Alumni Association has partnered with the University Career Development Center to make ePACK available to NC State alumni. If you are a current Alumni Association member, update your online profile by visiting the Wolfpack Connect (alumni directory) and click on the ‘Update My Info’ tab on the upper right side of the page. Select the ‘Career Connections’ tab and then choose ‘yes’ beside the question, ‘Do you want access to ePACK?’

To access ePACK you must be a member of the Alumni Association and you must be an alumnus/alumnae of NC State. If you are not a member of the Alumni Association, you can join online. Once you have received an email confirming your membership, you will be able to register for access to ePACK.
