Paxos Made Simple

Abstract:   The Paxos algorithm for implementing a fault-tolerant distributed system has been regarded as difficult to understand, perhaps because the original presentation was Greek to many. This talk will demonstrate that, when presented in plain English, Paxos is very simple.

Short Bio:   Leslie Lamport was a member of the program committee for the first conference on the Principles of Distributed Computing (PODC). By 1990, he knew so little about the subject that he was unable to write the chapter on distributed computing in the Handbook of Theoretical Computer Science by himself. His knowledge eventually diminished enough to qualify him for membership in the National Academy of Engineering.
