Pair Programming's Role in Lightening Up Software Development

Abstract: eCommerce software projects are often research-like in nature, yet are critical to an organization's success.  The nature of these projects has pushed up against the limits of traditional "heavyweight" software development processes.  Lightweight, flexible processes, such as Extreme Programming, are gaining notoriety as being more responsive in this turbulent software environment.

Many of these lightweight processes advocate the use of pair programmer, whereby two software engineers work together at one computer.  Pair programming informally aids communication, collaboration and knowledge transfer which can allow an organization to lighten up on some of its formal procedures and documentation.  This talk will discuss pair programming research findings and plans in the context of lightweight software development practices.
