Design Rationale
This Web site was designed by the Department of Computer Science webmaster and with the input from the CSC Web advisory committee. Most of the departmental Web pages, except those reverse-proxy'ed, conform to XHTML 1.0 Transitional specifications and W3C CSS specifications.
Our Web site main page is also Section 508 Bobby approved.
Several speed reports were performed on http://www.csc.ncsu.edu/. Here are the download times* results:
- At 56K; Download Time: 59 seconds
- At ISDN 128K; Download Time: 18 seconds
- At T1 1.44Mbps; Download Time: 1.7 seconds
*These download times are based on the full connection rate for ISDN and T1 connections. Modem connections (56Kbps or less) are corrected by a packet loss factor of 0.7. All download times include delays due to round-trip latency with an average of 0.2 seconds per object. With 15 total objects for the http://www.csc.ncsu.edu page, that computes to a total lag time due to latency of 3 seconds. Note also that this download time calculation does not take into account delays due to XHTML parsing and rendering.
