CSC IT Services

CSC IT maintains and supports a wide variety of departmental computing resources and environments for infractructure, academic, research, and administrative needs.

For Students

Software: CSC has software agreements with a couple of major software companies that allow CSC students to download software free of charge and install it on their personal computers. Agreements usually require students to be currently registered. Software available free of charge include Microsoft Software (except MS Office suite) and VMware host and client software. Additional software applications are also available (e.g. Adobe CS4 Web premium) through the Computing Virtual Lab environment (VCL).

If you are a student with a departmental-owned computer, then you will be entitled to install additional software free of charge such as Adobe Acrobat Professional and MS Office.

See our software availability Web page for additional information and guidelines.

Computer Labs: The Computer Science department has about 4 labs that are used for teaching purposes only and not for general student use. Computer lab reservation requests are accepted when submitted by the instructors. Request can be sent to help@csc.ncsu.edu

See our list of computer teaching labs.

The department also has "Graduate Student Labs" equipped with Windows and RHEL managed desktops available to any currently enrolled CSC graduate student. For a list of these labs please check our facilities Web page and look under "Graduate Student Labs".

Computing Environments for Teaching & Research: CSC IT staff offers various computing environments to CSC students for teaching and research. These environments include but are not limited to virtual environments (e.g. VMWare Virtual machines & Linux containers), Oracle DBMS accounts, and source code management accounts (e.g. Subversion, GIT). if your class or group is interesed in these services, please have a faculty sponsor submit a request to help@csc.ncsu.edu. Requests must also include whether it is for research or teaching -  if the latter please include the CSC course number.

For Faculty & Staff

Managed Desktop Environment: CSC IT supports Windows and RedHat Enterprise Linux managed desktop environments based on the University's Active Directory and RedHat Networking services, accordingly.  With these type of environments, system/antivirus/applications updates are managed centrally to ensure updates are pushed on time and when applicable.

File Sharing

In addition to the file & web services provided by COE ITECS, CSC IT provides a Windows-based shared common data storage for administrative use.  Its intended use is to allow administrative staff to quickly move and share documents and files among other CSC Staff members.  In this common storage, everyone has the ability to read and copy any data in anyone else's folder; however users are only permitted to write/modify files or data within their own personal folder.  User folders are created on a per request basis and are backed up daily to an OIT NAS share.
