Graduate Program - GRE/TOEFL Requirements
GRE General Score Requirements:
The GRE general exam is required of all applicants. The General GRE test scores expire five years after the test date. Expired scores are not accepted.
The average GRE scores (percent scoring below) of international applicants recently admitted to graduate study in the Department are: Verbal Reasoning 75%, Quantitative Reasoning 90%, and Analytical Writing 34%. The average GRE scores of recently-admitted US applicants are: Verbal Reasoning 72%, Quantitative Reasoning 78%, and Analytical Writing 53%. All three sections of the GRE are considered when evaluating applicants.
In addition to ordering electronic reporting of GRE test results (note: use institution code 5496) from ETS, we request you also upload copies of test reports with the online application as part of “Other Documents.” This is helpful in the event of any ETS reporting delay. Scores must be received by the university before the application deadline.
GRE Subject Test Scores:
A recent score for the GRE Subject Test in Computer Science is not required. However, a good score on the subject test may improve chances of admission, particularly if the applicant's prior academic background is something other than Computer Science.
TOEFL or IELTS Score Requirements:
English proficiency is a requirement for successful graduate studies at N.C. State. The Graduate School standards for demonstration of proficiency, which are necessary in order to be admitted to graduate study, may be found here . The department requirements for English proficiency are higher. The average TOEFL score of recently-admitted international applicants is 106. Students from countries not well represented in the department are however encouraged to apply, even with TOEFL scores significantly below this level.
