Dick Vann; Applied Math '69 (with CSC minor). "One special memory occurred in a class taught by Mr. Dave Reid. The course was on systems analysis and involved the initial systems analysis, the design of processes, and the selection of computers to meet the system needs. All of the senior CSC students and myself (I was always the +1 due to my Math major) were in the class. After due consideration, given that we all worked closely and most had offices in the building, we decided that there was only need to buy one book. We would all share the book and thus avoid the additional expense. All went fine in the class, we were able to share the book and we all completed our systems analysis projects with outside organizations, until final exams. We had not taken into account Mr. Reid's staunch belief in open book tests. As a solution, we split the book into its various chapters and then placed the parts of the book on a chair in the center of the room. All of the students were able to rearrange their seats in a circle around the book and thus access the parts as needed. It must have been a curious sight to see all of the students sitting in a circle, taking a test with a torn book in the center."
